Microsoft Self-Serve Password Reset

This article will help you change your password when you have already logged in and know your current password, as well as how to reset your password if you cannot log in to your account if you have security methods set up.

Note:For this to work, you would need to have had setup one of the security methods. You can use the Authenticator app you've setup with MFA or have setup alternate email security method on your account, or security questions security method.

It is recommended to set a 15-characters password that contains common letters, capital letters, numbers, and special characters. Please check our password recommendation article for best practices.

Change your password if you already know your current password

Please follow the instructions below to reset your account password after you've logged in to Office365

Step 1: Visit portal.office.com in your browser and sign in with your SMU account

Step 2: Click on your profile with your initials on the top right, then click on 'View account'

Step 3: Select 'Password' on the left panel

Step 4: In the new page, enter your old password (current password) then enter your new password in the 'create new password' and 'confirm new password' fields and hit 'Submit'.

The new password must have at least 8 characters, one uppercase letter, one number, and cannot be any password you used in the past for your account.

Note: If you're already logged in and don't know your current password, or have trouble getting to the screen in step 1, go directly to https://aka.ms/sspr and follow from step 3.

Step 1: At the initial login screen when you visit portal.office.com, click 'Can't access your account?'

Step 2: Select 'Work or school account'

Step 3: In the first field, enter your SMU email. In the second field, enter the characters in the picture that is generated for you. Click Next..

Step 4: On the left column, choose which security method you want to use to reset your password. You only need to choose ONE of the methods

Method 1: If you'd like to use alternate email password recovery, select 'Email my alternate email' in the left column then hit 'Email' on the right column.

You'll be sent a 6-digit code on your alternate email address. Check the alt. email inbox and enter the 6-digit code then hit 'Next' and continue to step 5.

Method 2: If you choose security questions method, select 'Answer my security questions' in the left column then answer the three questions on the right column then click 'Next' and continue to step 5.

Method 3: If you choose the authenticator app, select 'Enter a code from my authenticator app' on the left column, and enter the 6-digit one-time password code from your mobile device authenticator app, then click 'Next' and continue to step 5.

Step 5: Enter the new password in the first field, confirm the new password in the second field and hit 'Finish'.

The new password must have at least 8 characters, one uppercase letter, one number, and cannot be any password you used in the past for your account.

Step 6: You have reset your password to your SMU account services. Click on 'click here' to login to your account.
