What is Banner?
Self-Service Banner is the University’s official system for managing academic and administrative information. It is the primary place where students, faculty, and staff access important records related to courses, registration, grades, and personal information.
Note : To view coursework, assignments, contents, quizzes, individual content grades, please use Brightspace instead.
What is Banner used for?
For students, Banner is used to:

Register for classes
-
View current and past courses
-
Check grades and academic history
-
Review basic student account information
-
Access to tuition and fee information, including account balances
For faculty and staff, Banner supports:

Viewing class rosters and student information
-
Entering grades
-
Accessing employment-related information, depending on role
How do you access Banner?
In order to access Self-Service Banner (SSB), follow the steps below :
- Open a Web Browser (such as Microsoft Edge), as shown below :
- Once the browser opens, type this in the address bar : www.smu.ca. (as shown below - indicated by 2))
- Then, hover over "SMU Quick Links", and click on "Self-Service Banner". (as shown above - indicated by 3))
- Click on "Self-Service Banner" (as shown below), to access Self-Service Banner.
Please note that if you only want to Browse Classes, Course Catalog or Academic Calendar, you can do it from here itself.
- This will then take you to a login page (as shown below)
Here, enter your SMU Email and click Next to proceed.
In the next screen, Enter your Password and click "Sign In".
Finally, Enter your 2FA code from your Authenticator app (from your Phone) and click "Verify" to login.
- Once you successfully login, you may get a prompt that requests your authorization to "Look for and connect to any device on your local network" (as shown below).
Note : This is a security feature Microsoft has implemented asking to connect to devices on your local network.
Banner is a known trusted site and you must click "Allow" to proceed. (Otherwise you will get an "Authentication Failed" error.)

- After you click "Allow" , you will be redirected to the landing page (as shown below). Click the "Enter Self-Service Banner" button to expand the side menu.

If the red button is not visible, you may also click the Grid button in the left navigation Pane

- Then click "Banner Self-Service" to expand.
From here onwards, based on your role (Student/Staff/Faculty) , you may access various sections of Self Service Banner as detailed below :
What can you do in Self-Service Banner?
For Students :-
"Personal Information" -This page allows you to add/change your personal information details such as Preferred First Name, Alternate Email, Phone Number, Address and/or Emergency Contact(s).
"Student Information" > "Student Landing Page" provides a landing page with information and navigation to other Student-related sections.
"Student Information" > "Student Profile" allows you to to view student-related information such as:
- Academic Information such as credit hours, grades, GPA, and Registration Landing Page
- Academic records such as provision to apply for Academic Transcripts, Graduation.
- Services such as accessing Canadian Tax Forms (T2202 and T4A), Degree Works, Confirmation of Enrollment.
"Student Information" > "Registration" > "Registration Landing Page" allows you to
- Browse/Register for Classes and View Class/Registration Information, Waitlist, Registration History.
- Course withdrawal information
- Academic calendar
"Student Information" > "Academic Resources" allows you to access :
- Graduation Application Form
- Confirmation of Enrollment Letter Requests
- Academic Transcripts (Official & Unofficial)
For AST Students : You may access all of the above equivalent information in "Student Information" > "Atlantic School of Theology"
For Staff/Employees :-
Employee can access all employee-related information in "Employee Profile". This includes :
- Earnings and Pay-related information such as Pay Stubs,
- Benefits and Deductions
- Job Summary including Job Title and other information/
- Leave Balance
- Tax forms.
For Faculties :-
Faculty Members can access the faculty landing page under "Faculty & Advisors". Here they can view information such as:
- Faculty Landing Page that provides links to other faculty-related services including assignments, CourseLeaf, T2202A Tuition Tax Receipts, Academic Calendar, Course Withdrawal Information, Brightspace Support
- Grade Entry
- Week at a Glance
- Detail Schedule
- Registration Overrides, History
- Search Student
- Browse Classes
- Class List (and Wait List) (and previously Class Photo List)
General :-
"SMU Safe" provides alerts and information regarding school closures/openings and other announcement regarding university operations.
If you only want to Browse Classes/Course Catalog/Academic Calendar, visit the link smu.ca/selfservice.
What to do if you run into common issues?
Problem #1 : "Authentication Failed. Problem in external authentication service." (as shown below)

Solution :
-
Open Browser settings by clicking the three dots "..." and then select "Delete Browsing Data" as shown below.

Note : On Google Chrome, the three dots are represented vertically.
- Check only the "Cookies" and "Cached" and set the Time Range to "All Time" (as shown below).

- Then hit the "Clear Now" button.
Note : This will log you out from all websites and would require you to login again. This is essentially clearing the browsers memory of your past interactions. Saved Passwords and website autocomplete will not be affected if you've checked correctly.
- Once you clear browsing data, follow the steps from 2) to 7) in the "How do you access Banner?" section previously described in this article.
For the 6th step, make sure to click "Allow" and NOT "Block"
Problem #2 : "No Valid Route" error

Solution : Submit a Service Ticket or Contact the EIT Helpdesk (Instructions below this section)
Problem #3 : Facing difficulties finding what you need?
Solution : Please see this page here : https://www.smu.ca/academics/register-for-courses.html.
If this still does not resolve the issue, you may also raise a service ticket. (Instructions below this section)
Problem #4 : Sometimes, when trying to search, you may encounter 404 Not Found error (as shown below).
Solution : This is a known issue with the current version. Instead of using Search, click on the red "Enter Self-Service Banner" button as described previously in Step 7 of "How do you access Banner?" section , and use the side menu to navigate.
Problem #5 : Error "AADSTS75011: Authentication Method 'X509, MultiFactor, PasswordlessPhoneSignIn"

Solution : You need to disable passwordless sign-in in the Microsoft Authenticator app as outlined below
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- Tap on the SMU account for which you want to disable passwordless sign-in
- Tap the gear icon (⚙️) or the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select "Disable phone sign-in" or "Disable passwordless sign-in".
- Confirm the action when prompted.
- Open a new incognito/inPrivate window, and repeat steps 2) to 7) in the "How do you access Banner?" section.
