Phishing scams are carried out by cyber criminals. These criminals send misleading emails that can look like they come from legitimate sources (banks, social websites, IT administrators, and others). The goal is to get recipients to share sensitive personal information like usernames, passwords and credit card information and exploit those personal details.
Be safe
Here are some basic tips on making sure your valuable, personal information doesn’t end up in the wrong hands:
- Never respond to emails that request personal financial information.
- Be cautious when clicking on web links in emails you receive. If the email isn't from a well-trusted source, the link is likely to a malicious website. Never click on an unknown link.
- Even if the link is recognizable, do not click directly from an email. For instance, visit banks’ websites by typing the URL into the address bar or searching for the bank's login page on Google.
- If an email requires your SMU account password, DO NOT continue. EIT will never ask for your account credentials in an email.
- Never share your password and other account credentials with anyone.
- Always use unique passwords and never reuse them for multiple systems.
- Always keep your software up to date.
