Changing Password When Working Remotely

There are 2 processes for changing passwords when working off campus on a university computer.

Scenario 1 - Password has not expired

  1. Connect to VPN. (See Connecting to VPN instructions)
  2. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and select Change Password
  3. Make a new password that is different from the last 6 passwords that you've had.

Scenario 2 -  Password has expired

  1. Go to activate.smu.ca and make the password the same as your current login to the computer
  2. Reconnect to VPN (See Connecting to VPN instructions)
  3. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and select Change Password
  4. Make a new password that is different from the last 6 passwords that you've had.

**If you do not connect to VPN, your password for the computer will remain the same as it was before you brought the pc home.  You can keep the old password for logging in and go to activate.smu.ca to make a new password.  You will then have 2 different passwords, one for logging into the computer and one for your s# for everything else (portal.office.com, SMUport, etc).  You will then get a popup in Outlook where you will need to put in the new password and check the box to remember password.

If the password in Outlook keeps popping up, you may need to reactivate your account to make the password the same as the original one.
