If you aren't receiving the notifications or mass emails from the university, it is due to the fact that the preferred email address isn't set to what is expected. For faculty and staff, the preferred address must be your SMU address. For students, it will vary but if you are expecting it to go to one specific address, you should confirm/change your preferred in Banner.
