Getting Started with Office365

Email with Office365

In SMUport, you will have a Mail icon in the top right of the page. Clicking this icon will redirect you to the sign-in for your email.

Or, access your email from portal.office.com by typing in your SMU email address (usually in this format, firstname.lastname@smu.ca) for the username and pressing the Tab key. A picture of the front of Saint Mary's University should come up indicating you’re on SMU’s login page. Type in your s# password to login to your Office365 account.

Once you log in for the first time, you will see multiple “tiles.” These tiles are apps connected to your Office365 account.

With your account, you have five free installations (for personal/home use) of the Microsoft Office 2016 suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook) on a Mac OSX or Windows system, and a separate five free installs across devices such as tablets and phones. (However, you can remove access for an unused system in your settings to regain an installation).

Clicking the Outlook tile will direct you to your SMU Inbox.

If you prefer to have your SMU Inbox open as you first log into Office365, you can change it under the [Start page] setting by clicking on  and under the [My app settings] for [Office 365].

Pinning Apps

You can also pin your most used apps to the top navigation bar by clicking on the “waffle” icon and then hovering your mouse over an app tile and clicking on the three dots in the top right of the tile.

OneDrive and Online Office Apps

The OneDrive app is your cloud storage connected through your SMU Office365 account. This allows you to sync all your important documents to the “cloud,” which means always having access to your files from any device with a browser or OneDrive application.

For example, you can create a Word document through the Word app tile which automatically saves to your OneDrive cloud storage. You never have to worry about saving the file frequently.

If you want to access this file from a mobile device, you can download the OneDrive app on Android, iOS, or Windows device.

If you want the mobile versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, or Outlook, you can go to your app settings from within the browser (by clicking on the cogwheel in the top right and clicking on Office365 settings on bottom right) and then click on Software on the bottom.

Then click Phone & tablet on the left hand side where it will walk you through obtaining the apps for your mobile devices.

Similar to other cloud storage platforms, you can also share your OneDrive files or folders with a person or group of people.
