Signing in to Brightspace

Brightspace is Saint Mary's University's learning management system (LMS), where students access course materials, assignments, quizzes, grades, and other learning resources.

This article explains how to sign in, common sign-in issues, and the steps to resolve them.

How to sign in to Brightspace (SMU students)

  1. Visit smu.brightspace.com
  2. Select SMUEmail@smu.ca Login.
  3. Enter your SMU email address and password.
  4. Complete Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) if prompted.

I can't sign in to Brightspace

The solution depends on your situation.

  • I am a new student

New students must be registered in at least one course through Banner before they can access Brightspace.

Before investigating further, verify:

  • Have you registered for courses?
    • No: Register for courses through Banner first.
    • Yes: Continue with the steps below.
  • Do you already have a SMU email address and can sign in to portal.office.com?
    • No: Please activate your account first (activate.smu.ca), and try again after thirty minutes.
    • Yes: Continue with the steps below.

Brightspace receives enrollment information automatically from Banner. As soon as a student enrolls in a course in Banner, that information is transferred to Brightspace, and an account is created. Although this process is usually very quick, there may occasionally be a short delay.

Students cannot access Brightspace before the official start of classes, even if they have already registered.

If the issue persists after registering for courses, contact the EIT Helpdesk.

  • I'm a current or returning student

If you have previously used Brightspace, check the following:

Verify you're using the correct login portal

  • Go to smu.brightspace.com

  • Use SMU login, not Guest.

Verify your password

If you forgot your password or it has expired:

  • Visit aka.ms/sspr
  • Reset your password following the instructions on the screen.
  • Try signing in again.

  • MFA issues

If you're experiencing problems with Multi-Factor Authentication, such as:

  • Getting a new phone
  • Lost access to Microsoft Authenticator
  • Other MFA authentication problems

Contact the EIT Helpdesk for assistance.

  • Can sign in to Outlook or Banner, but not Brightspace

If you can successfully access other SMU services but cannot access Brightspace, contact the EIT Helpdesk for additional troubleshooting.

If the issue is determined to be related to SSO or MFA and requires further investigation in Brightspace, forward the case to the Brightspace administrators.

  • External or Guest users

External and guest users do not sign in using the SMU login. Instead:

  1. Use the Guest Login Portal.
  2. Select Forgot your Password if you need to reset your password.
  3. Reset the password yourself.

  • SMUPD Users

Executive Professional Development (SMUPD) users use a separate Brightspace environment.

  • Visit the External Participant Login.
  • Reset your password using the Forgot your Password option if necessary.

Note that:

  • SMUPD is a separate Brightspace instance administered by the Executive Professional Development department.
  • SMU users authenticate with SSO.
  • External participants authenticate through the External Participant Login.

Other Brightspace-related issues

  • I can sign in, but I don't see my courses

If you can access Brightspace but your courses are missing:

  1. Verify that you have selected the correct academic term in the course widget.
  2. Confirm that classes have officially started.
  3. Ensure you are registered in the correct term in Banner.

Most courses become available on the first day of classes.

Instructors control course availability, so some courses may open earlier than others. Courses rarely become available later than the first day.
If the course should already be available but is not visible, there may be a synchronization delay between Banner and Brightspace.
Brightspace administrators can manually enroll students when necessary.

  • I can sign in, but quizzes, assignments, or other content are missing

If quizzes, assignments, modules, grades, or other course content are missing:

  • Contact your course instructor first.
  • If additional investigation is required, email studio@smu.ca.
  • Cases requiring further investigation should be forwarded to the Brightspace administrators.

  • Content does not load properly

If Brightspace pages fail to load or behave unexpectedly:

  • Disable any VPNs, ad blockers, or content blockers.
  • Enable pop-ups in your browser.
  • Clear your browser cache.
  • Restart your device.
  • Try a different browser.

Microsoft Edge (preferred), Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox generally provide the best compatibility. Safari is not recommended, as it is responsible for the majority of reported browser-related issues. Chrome, Firefox, and especially Edge typically provide a more reliable experience.

When to escalate

Forward the issue to the Brightspace administrators (studio@smu.ca) when:

  • A student requires manual enrollment.
  • Brightspace account provisioning has failed.
  • SSO or MFA issues have been ruled out, and additional Brightspace investigation is required.
  • Course enrollment synchronization between Banner and Brightspace appears to have failed.
  • Missing course content requires Brightspace administration to investigate.
