How to report a suspicious or suspected phishing email

If you receive a suspicious or phishing email, you can now easily report it to the EIT Help Desk with a simple click of a button from with your Outlook email. 

This button will work within Office 365 Webmail, desktop versions of Outlook (on both Windows and Macs) as well as on mobile devices (Android, iPhones, iPads).

If you would like assistance to determine if an email is phishing or not, please ask for help from hdesk@smu.ca or itsecurityassistant@smu.ca

To report a suspicious or phishing email, please follow the steps provided below.

  • Step 1: (choose one of the three options within step 1)
    •  Desktop Version of Outlook
      1. Click "Report of suspected phishing email".
        When you view a suspicious or phishing email, click the "Report of suspected phishing email" that appears in the top right corner of the email.  
        (see image below)




         
      2. Then chose 'Phishing'


         
      3. Done!  Thank you for reporting suspicious emails!


         
    • Office 365 Webmail: 
      1. When viewing the email, click on the 'Junk' icon  (see image below)


         
      2. Click on 'phishing' (see image below)


         
      3. Done!  Thank you for reporting suspicious emails!



    •  Outlook App on Mobile devices (Android, iPhone, iPad): 
       
      1. Click the message, then on the ellipsis (3 dots) - (Image shown below)


         
      2. Click Report Message




         
      3. Choose Report as Phishing


         
      4. Done!  Thank you for reporting suspicious emails!
